Sydney
2000 Olympic Preview
A SPECIAL TWO-PART
TWOJ REPORT
Three different Japanese
men won European 'A' tournaments this year, a fourth won a silver
and a fifth won the Asian Championships (a sixth even beat John Buchanan
in the final of the British Open but we won't dwell on that). To suggest
that Japan are well endowed at -60kg would be an understatement...

European
Championships 2000
MAY 26-28, 2000:
WROCLAW, POLAND
At
the end of a gruelling contest the buzzer sounded; Karina Bryant wheeled
around to the photographers and punched the air; she was European
champion again. Bryant's gold topped off an outstanding championship
for the British women's team who plundered another three silvers to
finish second behind the French women. But for the odd contentious
referee's decision they could even have swaggered home with four golds.

rested as they had finished in the top eight at the Worlds. Four Japanese
fighters, however, had failed to qualify last year and a couple of
Korean former World Champions did not even compete in Birmingham so
there was plenty of talent on display...

As
Seen in Texas
USA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
APRIL 28-29, 2000: HUSTON, TEXAS
A couple of months ago I was fortunate enough to be present at the
USA National Championships in Houston, Texas. GEEMAT had supplied
six new competition areas and we were there to support our American
agent. Judo in the USA has many of the same problems that we have
here in Britain: despite the fact that both the USA and Great Britain
have current men's World Champions there is very little interest from
the general public, hardly any national television coverage, no sponsors
and very little money injected into the sport. So it was very heartening
to find an organising committee determined to improve the look of
their competitions, and increase the amount of media coverage despite
the lack of funding...
