Winners
of the Women's British Closed 2001 were offered the chance to represent
Great Britain at the 19th Fukuoka Cup in December. Four were able
to attend and fought amongst the 133 women judoka at this event. Others
came from:- Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Cuba,
Czech Republic, Fiji, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea,
Macao, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Slovakia,
Sweden, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Taiwan and Uzbekistan!
Results were as follows: The +78kg title went to China's Sun Fuming,
who threw Midori Shintani JPN with Ko-soto-gari for Ippon in the final
to clinch her third title. Bronzes went to Yamashita JPN and Liu CHN.
The -78kg final saw Olympic Silver medallist (and Open weight World
Champion) Celine Lebrun FRA defeat World Champion Noriko Anno JPN
on a judges' decision to capture her first Fukuoka title. While third
place honours were shared by Toriyabe JPN and Cho KOR.
In her 13th appearance at this event, Ulla Werbrouck BEL claimed a
fourth victory when she beat Haruko Kazato JPN in the -70kg final.
Bronzes to Boehm GER and Jacques BEL. At -63kg Bronzes went to Decosse
FRA and Yoshiwaza JPN while fellow Japanese Ayumi Tanimoto narrowly
beat compatriot Yoshie Ueno by a Shido penalty in the final. "She
(Ueno) has been improving a lot but I believed victory would be mine
if I stuck with my favorite judo style," Tanimoto said. Midori Shintani
JPN beat Cuba's Daima Beltran with an Ippon in the Open category final.
Beltran said after "I'm not in full training at the moment, but will
be ready for next year". Bronzes in this category went to Olivier
BEL who scored Ippon against Tsukada JPN with a hold-down and Liu
CHN, who beat Laborde CUB (normally seen fighting at -70kg) also by
Ippon. Kayo Kitada threw compatriot Tomoe Makabe in the -48kg final
with Seoi-nage, winning her first title. Fukumi JPN and Zhao CHN each
took Bronze. Olympic and World Champion Ryoko Tamura, who had hoped
for a 12th straight title, sat out the championship due to injury.
Yuki Yokosawa JPN beat Aiko Sato JPN on a judges' decision in the
-52kg final. Audrey La Rizza FRA shared Bronze with Mika Kazama JPN,
both won their matches by Ippon.
In the -57kg class, Yurisleidis Lupetey CUB took only 12 seconds in
the final to throw Deborah Gravenstijn NED with Sode-tsuri-komi-goshi
for Ippon and earn herself victory. For the Bronzes Barbara Harel
FRA beat Sophie Cox GBR on a decision and shared third place with
Linli Zehng CHN, who scored an Ippon over Kuobta JPN with a hold-down.
Sarah Clarke -63kg Fought 3 Won 1 Beat Hanprasert THA, then lost to
Decosse FRA. Then in the repechage lost to Dixon AUS.
