to The World of Judo Online!
Hello again and welcome to edition 32 of TWOJ. I find it hard to believe that this issue means
I have now been producing this magazine for eight years! A special thank you to all those
of you who have supported me since the beginning. During my entire time as editor I have had
the pleasure of publicising the achievements of many British judo players at various levels
in the sport but this issue is particularly special. The Commonwealth Games in Manchester
saw so much British judo success that I have had to limit the front cover to showing only
the Gold medallists. The entire event is the focus of this issue and you will see that pages
16 - 25 are dedicated to celebrating every aspect of this spectacular occasion. The atmosphere
was the best I have known at any event in this country and was more than a match for the best
judo events anywhere in the world. TWOJ can in fact claim some small piece of the credit for
the great atmosphere created, our proof reader (actually my wife Kim!) was the announcer bringing
the fighters in to the arena and she'd like me to tell you that she did a great job!! (OK,
OK now will you make my dinner Kim?)
It's good to see our new BJA Cheif Executive is now in post and introduces himself on page
10 and our Chairman, Densign White, brings us up to date on all that has been going on behind
the scenes since we elected him.
I get so much response to "Scene around" that I have expanded it this time. If you
want to get in on the act then come and talk to me next time you see me with a camera in my
Also in this issue: reports on The European Cadet Championships, The Junior Worlds and the
World Teams along with some interesting insight into how effective judo skills are in the
wider fighting context of UFC (see "A Brawl at the Hall" p.29 and "Judo Rules"
p.5) I hope you'll enjoy it all. Let me know - I really do value all the comments you send
me. So keep them coming.
