Union member presidents at the Pan-American Games in Santo Domingo.

ever. Public interest is on the wane here, especially after the World
Cup put Judo even further down the list of popular sports to watch
or do.

"Incomparable" was the word muttering under
the breaths of thousands of pairs of lips as Kosei Inoue strode triumphantly
from the mat at the end of the first day of competition in Osaka.
The genial judoka had just produced another mesmerising masterclass
in judo, lifting the entire packed-out Jo-Hall stadium to its feet
in appreciation and applause.

Seeing the blue, red and white of the Cuban
national flag hoisted time and again is nothing new in judo circles,
Cuban women have been dominating the Pan-American region for more
than a decade.

"Go Fiji go! Go Fiji go!" The chant rings around the stadium
as another Fijian steps onto the tatami to do battle. Eighty-four
competitors from eight countries are fighting in the South Pacific
Games Judo event which provides a chance for fighters from these small,
far flung islands to compete against others of similar experience
and ability.
