Well a little late in the day may I wish you all a very happy New
Year and welcome you to the winter issue of TWOJ. This issue has a
particularly British flavour, covering some of the most important
events in our calendar for players of all age groups. Junior nationals,
National Youth Trials and National Grand Finals.

The crème-de-la-crème may have
been missing but this was still a great opportunity to savour the
best of British beef in prime action. The new format for the British
Trials pitted the top eight fighters in each category in pools of
four, followed by straight semi-finals and finals. It was the format
we have all been waiting for and the absence of some of the top fighters
from these shores did little to detract from an inspiring competition.

A competition which began back in May in Dusseldorf,
Germany, came down to a straight fight between four teams at the Brentford
Fountain Leisure Centre in London. Britain qualified as hosts but
the three formidable opponents dispatched the likes of France, Germany
and Holland to reach this stage. For the first time since 1974 the
European Team championships returned to British shores in front of
a capacity crowd.

"Go Fiji go! Go Fiji go!" The chant
rings around the stadium as another Fijian steps onto the tatami to
do battle. Eighty-four competitors from eight countries are fighting
in the South Pacific Games Judo event which provides a chance for
fighters from these small, far flung islands to compete against others
of similar experience and ability.
