Well here we are again! Summer has arrived and with it the prospect
of the Athens Olympic Games. It is hard to believe that four years
have passed since we were all
heading off to Sydney, but what's great is that this time it's so much nearer
home.
The qualification process for our fighters has been a nail-biting time not only
for
them, but for those of us following their progress - and for some, things weren't
finally decided until the Europeans in Romania (see report starting p.20). For
those
of you who didn't quite make it, our commiserations - you're in for the long
haul to
Beijing now - but for those stepping on to the tatami in Athens, congratulations!
Whatever happens you are Olympians now and have scaled the heights that most
of us only dream of. I shall be there with my camera to capture the drama and
you
may be sure that all the TWOJ readership and the rest of the BJA (not to mention
the entire British public) are right behind you! No pressure though!!
Returning to the Europeans, it was a really great event from every perspective.
The
layout of the hall was excellent - perfect for officials, spectators and, most
importantly, photographers!
As ever I am struggling to fit everything in to this issue. My apologies
must go to the VI fighters at the British Open. Your part in the
competition is not covered in the report starting on page 26, partly
because the early finish to your event, without a clearly presented
set of finals, made it impossible for a single journalist to keep
track of everything. Let's hope we can get this right next time but
for now, congratulations to the British medallists, with Golds going
to Ben Coulter and Simon Jackson, a Silver to Ian Rose and Bronzes
to Darren Kale and Maxine Ingram.
I've picked a favourite picture to share with you from the Pan American Games
- it has a full page on p.16. Let me know what you think.
But enough from me! Keep your news and comments coming and get your comedy
heads on, we need some more responses to the caption competition (Junior page)
Look forward to hearing from you.
